No, I did not lick a frozen pole like Ralphy’s friend, but this is almost as bad a situation. We are caught in a blizzard in Bethesda. What was supposed to be a fun 2 day ride to NJ to see family for the holidays has turned into a possible 3 night stay in Maryland with no chance of driving anywhere this weekend. Here’s to hoping there’s something fun within walking distance from our hotel. And here’s to hoping my sneakers hold up in 14 inches of snow…

Summer’s Almost Over

I have one week left of classes, and I can’t wait. This year at Hollins has been fun, but I am ready for it to be over. We are headed out to Ryan’s family reunion at the beginning Aug, then off to San Diego for a few days, then to my family reunion, and finally back home so Ryan can start school again. Hahaha, I love going to school for 6 weeks. Ryan is such a sucker.
We can’t wait to be back with all our friends.

Roanoke, VA, Here We Come!

Ryan and I have been searching around Roanoke, VA for the past few months trying to find someone willing to rent to us for only 6 weeks while I go to school. No apartment complexes were accommodating, so we had to think creatively. We found a few motels, extended stay hotels, corporate housing, and vacation rentals. Our first trip to VA was very disheartening and disgusting. The weekly rental motels were something out of a horror movie. The “kitchen” area of the room had creepy little critters waiting to greet us. They were just hanging out on their backs with their legs kicking in the air on the linoleum floor.

Gag.

We ran out of there and decided to do some more searching for our next trip up. Last Saturday we had some good prospects lined up, and we struck gold. We found a beautiful, quite, serene, relaxing lake house that is fully furnished. The owner agreed to rent to us for just 6 weeks. There are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a hot tub, plus dishes and a washer and dryer.

We saw this dream house in the afternoon and still had a few appointments. But even our next stop at a creepy man’s house could not sway us with the grand tour of his basement (that Ryan couldn’t even stand up in) with no walls in the “bathroom,” two nasty cats roaming around, and a sheet hanging up as a divider; his mom (yes he lives with his mom) tried to seal the deal with Ryan by scratching her boobs while she was smoking in our faces and giving us a wary eye. It was a tough call, but the lake house won.

We are so excited not to be staying in a skeevy motel for my time at grad school. This place will definitely help me as I take on my first creative writing class. Hopefully we can send more pictures of the place as we live there for the next month. Now all we need is to get our hands on some kind of boat. Anyone have a canoe?

Funeral Crasher

I have been to two funerals this last week; first Ryan’s grandma’s and then my grandpa’s. It took 9 planes to get from NC to ID, then ID to NC, then NC to IL, then IL to NC. I just got back, and I am exhausted! Many things went wrong during the trip (losing a laptop for one), but it all worked out in the end (we got the computer back!), and I am glad I was able to go to both funerals and visit/console both sides of my family. They sure do bring out opposite sides of my personality.

Discovery Cove

We went to the most amazing place called Discovery Cove. It is a man-made resort where we went snorkeling, watched dolphins (we didn’t pay to “swim” with them), fed the birds, laid by the pools, listened to steel drums, and ran in the sand. The aviary has very cool birds, and the non-snorkeling/dolphin pools are heated! It was the BEST part of our Florida trip. It was amazingly beautiful, fun, and relaxing. Discovery Cove is an all inclusive day that is totally worth the money.

Disney Parks

Here are some pictures from our Disney days. First we went to Cirque Du Soleil. Totally awesome. We also went to Downtown Disney, which is where we saw the enormous Lego creations. Yeah, those are all Legos. Then we went to Epcot, which we really liked. We took a tour of Epcot’s unusual garden. They were growing all kinds of things in very unconventional ways. Epcot mostly had mini towns modeled after different countries. The statue of the Norse warrior is a likeness of my brother Pete. Our last day we went to Magic Kingdom. We rode in the very front of the monorail and passed through the the Disney hotel. The last pictures are of us eating at a great restaurant called Tchop Chop by Emeril. Yum. The atmosphere was coolness.

Savannah

We stopped in Savannah, GA on our drive down to Florida. On our way back we stopped again but didn’t take any pictures because the streets were filled at all hours with drunkards celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. I knew we were in The South when I saw a Piggly Wiggle truck.
